Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

GPR works well in many places and is a valuable tool in our geophysical arsenal of equipment. EMC uses only GSSI GPR equipment with many antennas from 20 MHz to 2.5 GHz to be utilized on almost any type of soil or concrete. Generally speaking, GPR has a penetration depth in the subsurface dependent on the permeability and conductivity of the soils or concrete. This ranges from 1 – 81; where Air is 1 and water is 81. Therefore, a relative permittivity of 81 is a great reflector because it does not permit the wave to travel through it, and a relative permittivity of 1 is a great transmitter of the microwave signal. The main uses for GPR are investigating for pipelines, utilities, underground storage tanks, archaeological sites, unmarked burials voids and saturated soils.

For more than 15 years EMC has utilized Geophysical Archaeometry Laboratory’s GPR-SLICE 3D modeling software.  This allows for the processing and mapping of GPR data far beyond what was available in the past.  Images produced can be very valuable in interpreting what may be going on at a particular site.  While this modeling is very helpful it is important to remember GPR has limitations that should be considered especially in areas of highly conductive soils.
